Cordova is picturesque in every way. Mountains rise up behind and the lake shines in front. As a first-year camper at the Cordova Music Camp, this seemed like heaven.
We arrived on a Friday afternoon during the Salmon Jam. Within the first hour, we felt at home. The next night, my mom was scheduled to play at the Salmon Jam,but she did not have a band to play with her. We searched and found a band that was going to appear at the camp. Foxfire Bluegrass said they would be willing to help. In about 20 minutes, we were ready to perform. The willingness, kindness and responsibility they showed was exceptional just like the rest of the camp participants. Monday started with an 8:30 a.m. breakfast and the first class followed at 10:30 a.m. My first class was Dobro with Kevin Haisman from Foxfire Bluegrass. Participants could choose many classes, including tin whistle, mandolin, fiddle, hammer dulcimer, guitar, piano and song writing – plus many more. Student willingness and individuality mixed with the patience and cooperation of the teachers, instructors and counselors. In the evenings, the camp hosted a square dance, water fight or something else to bring the campers together. These activities added to the small-town charm. The last night featured our band concerts, which were phenomenal. Overall, the camp was amazing and loads of fun. The people were great, along with the music. Cordova’s beauty and serenity pulled all the attributes together. Drawing kids with different musical backgrounds from all over the United States brings a sense of unity to the camp. The staff helps show each person that he or she can be great no matter the level of experience. This camp is amazing. That’s the best way to say it. As a first year, 13-year-old camper, I say everyone should go and have fun. Everybody who helped with this camp deserves a big round of applause.
Cordova music camp is an adventure and a life changing experience!
